Have we forgotten the last little bit?

Once again I am pondering the discussions that we had in our life group this week.  We did a super quick tour of Genesis 12 to the end.  And it got me thinking – do we sometimes focus on one part of God’s promises to us and forget the last little bit?  Perhaps it is a prophesy you have had, or a word of encouragement you have taken from the bible, but how often do we pick a nice bit out and forget the last bit of it?

In Genesis 12 God speaks to Abraham and gives him this promise:

“Leave your country, your people and your fathers household and go to the land I will show you.

I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you;
I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you and whoever curses you I will curse;

And all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” Genesis 12:1-3

(Note: I have added the gaps for emphasis)

We all like that middle bit of the promise where God is going to make everything nice and cosy for us, we will be famous and those who are nasty to us will get a big slap from God.  It’s a bit like the enticement of the X factor that you could be everything you ever wanted to be!  But often we leave out the first bit – which is our commitment and sacrifice that is needed.  Abraham had to leave security to travel with this amazing God into that blessing.  Perhaps you are not ready to do that yet, and that is why you are not experiencing this blessing that God has promised.

But for those of us who have taken that step of faith, away from the way of the world into whatever God has shown to us, we quite often leave out the last little bit.  That last line that says the blessing we receive is not just for us, but it has a bigger purpose.  Yes God wants us to have a nice life and a nice house and all those things, but never so we can just sit selfishly in it and enjoy it all to ourselves.  The reason God blesses us and makes us famous is so that we can share that with others!!!  So that it can overflow from our lives into those around us.

This is a huge challenge to me today, as I go about my life in this individualistic society, with all its worries and cares.  I quite easily get lost in my own little bubble and forget that I should be sharing all my blessings with those around me.  This is why Israel ended up wandering around in desert – they forgot that it wasn’t just about them and missed that last little bit of the promise.  This is why sometimes our plans don’t work out because they are selfish and don’t look out to others.  I know I may not have explained this well, but my overall message it this – don’t pick and choose the nice easy parts of God, the blessings and whatnot.  Choose all of God and remember to do the last little bit, because when you start blessing others with what God has given you, you really start to understand what blessing is.

    I get what you're saying, but this is a specific promise made to Abraham that is ultimately fulfilled in Christ. Yes, we are part of it, but I think we have to be very careful not to lift scripture and directly apply it to ourselves in this way. We know from the New Testament that the world will hate us as it hated Jesus, and that if we are to expect anything it should be trouble and persecution in this life. I don't want to put a downer on this as God does bless us immensely (and the physical blessings we experience are nothing compared to the blessings we have in Christ). However, I don't think God is concerned about us having a nice life/house, but rather knowing and trusting Him regardless of the situation we find ourselves in.
