Earth Leaders push for position,
Demagogues and delegates meet for summit talks,
The God-deniers, the Messiah- defiers:
“Let’s get free of God!
Cast loose from Messiah!”
Heaven-throned God breaks out laughing
(Psalm 2:1-6 Message Version)
So I guess its apt for my thoughts to turn to politics the day before the General Election here in the UK. Its a big deal. It could have huge consequences on how our country is run going forward. And that scares me a little. But this morning I opened up my bible and read the next Psalm on my list and my fears were calmed a little bit.
You see its not new, all this pushing and shoving and arguing. Politics hasn’t gotten childish in the last decade, not even in the last century or millennium. Politics has been childish since it first began! I guess its very essence in raising some people up to “power” brings out the worst in people. But we have to remember that ultimate power lies in the hands of our awesome God in heaven. That no matter what happens tomorrow when the polling stations open, God will still be our ultimate authority and He will be there looking out for us.
The Psalm says that God “breaks out laughing” and I think that is at our feeble attempts to try to be like Him, to try to pretend like one party or politician has even the slightest clue on how to fix all the problems in our society! Yes it is very serious as to who we vote for, but at the end of the day there is only one person who can make this world a better place and that is Jesus. Through His death on the cross, He made a way for sin to end and for death not to have a hold on us. And isn’t that really what the world’s problems are? Boiled down they amount to the consequences of our own sin and our fear of death.
So here is my/God’s solution for what we should be doing instead:
So, rebel-kings, use your heads;
Upstart judges, learn your lessons:
Worship God in adoring embrace,
Celebrate in trembling awe. Kiss Messiah!
if you make a run for God – you won’t regret it
(Psalm 2:10-12 excluding v11 The Message version)
Yes we should all use our vote tomorrow – don’t make our Christian voice silent in the world – but let us remember that although we are in the world and fall under it’s rulers authorities, we are also of the spiritual world where God reigns supreme and where His rule is everlasting (not just 5 years until we realise how useless his plan was and vote someone else in instead!).
