I am a horrible mother!

As I sit here eating my son’s milkybar buttons that I sneaked from his chocolate tin, deciding what healthy dinner to give him whilst knowing I will be eating pizza after he’s gone to bed, and feeling relieved that I have a few minutes to myself, I had the sudden realisation that I am a horrible, horrible mother!!

Now I know that all my lovely mother friends will rush to my defense and say I’m not, but hear my point first.  Sometimes its OK to be “horrible”.  And I guess in a way that depends on your definition of horrible.

As a mother, we are programmed to look out for our children, to protect and care for them and to make difficult choices for their lives on their behalf.  The weight of that can sometimes be so overwhelming, so crippling, that it is difficult to cope.  At church this Sunday we were looking at emotional health, but the same lesson applies to every part of our lives – we need to make sure that we are filling up our tanks as much as they are being emptied.

Whether it be physically, emotionally or spiritually, we need to make sure that we take time, space and energy to protect our own health and well being.  So whatever that means for you, you need to be a little bit of a horrible mother and do it.  It is for the greater good (Hot Fuzz fans will appreciate this…).  That may mean eating some chocolate or having some time to yourself.  It may mean having a nice comforting meal in peace and quiet.  I don’t think we need to feel guilty about being a bit selfish with our choices sometimes, because if that is what we need to fill our tanks ready for the next day then good!  At the end of the day, we are adults and can make balanced decisions of our own, whereas our children can not.
